Arkansas Snowflake ~ 1742 S. Bunker Hill Road (36.046180, -85.533583)

"My Great Aunt, Ella Mae Howard, gave me the last quilt-top pieced by my Great Grandmother in 1952. She passed away in August of the same year at the age of 86. I never knew my grandmothers, but I remember Granny Howard ~ she pieced me a doll quilt. I was seven years old when she died." said Barbara Holman, "The pattern is simple, but pretty, containing some scraps of her dresses. As far as I can find out, the name of the pattern is 'Arkansas Snowflake.' I figured it was 'The Last of the Scraps' but I ran across the pattern in a photo on a barn and it was called that. My mother and I quilted the quilt."

Granny's Flower Garden - 852 Old Kentucky Road (36.053030, -85.517172)

Granny's Flower Garden:

"We wanted to paint a quilt in memory of our Mother and Grandmother. She only quilted for necessity and they were not fancy quilts, but she loved her flowers and had them everywhere. We are calling our quilt 'Granny's Flower Garden' in memory of Granny, 'Auda Pistole Howard.'"

Blazing Star. 669 Dillon Gribble Road (36°02042,-85°28247) Red barn, far west side of Dillon Gribble Road; best seen heading north about .3 miles from Walter Stone Road, looking northwest

The “Cheer Up Farm” is located on part of the original Dillon Gribble farm, the farm was divided in 1989, when the landowner purchased it. The pattern was selected because the mother of the owner, Faye Griggs, who was a talented quilter, gardener and wonderful cook, had created several quilts using this pattern.

Choosing a pattern made by the owner’s grandmother, the owners are very interested in the rich heritage and history of this land they purchased in 2006 on the Bon Air Mountain, east of the Sparta city limits.

Property owners, Charles and Connie Wood.  “We acquired this property in 1995. Hollis and Lucy Moore were the original owners that built the barn sometime in the mid 1940’s. This Turtle Quilt was made in 1970, by Lou Ester Wood, grandmother of property owner Charles Wood. Lou Ester was 76 years old when she made the quilt and gave it to her grandson.”

As with so many other sites, the owner of this property fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and the friendly people of White County, and moved into the present address at 1986.
“I’m told it was mostly farmland with cornfields. I have a treasure of arrowheads found in the fields, and have been told locals used to learn to swim on the property. I feel very honored to have and enjoy this land with all its beauty and serenity. It is a piece of history with all its glorious beauty and wildlife. The pattern I chose is ‘Appalachian Sunset’ and I chose it for its brightness and beauty. One of many beauties.” Pat Sherman

Jacob’s Ladder. 531 Boyd Creek Road (35°58966,-85°34198) Just north of Fancher’s Mills Road; located off road with view mostly obstructed from roadway, best seen heading northbound.

To honor her great-grandmother Lillian Mae Lawson, the property owner  chose the Jacob’s Ladder pattern – one of the quilts she has that was made by Lillian. Lillian Mae Lawson was born in Dec. 2, 1881 and at age 34, gave birth to Jesse Coe Lawson, the barn owner’s grandfather.

The quilt was made of flour sacks and scraps of materials she could find. The back is domestic or heavy feel sackcloth, not batting and measures 70” x 73”. Her stitches are beautifully presented and very small. The quilt hangs in a place of honor at the home of the property owner / Lillian’s great-granddaughter Barbara McCulley.

Lillian Mae Lawson died on May 27, 1931, and is buried in Old Bon Air Cemetery. She was not yet 50 years old at the time of her death; and her son Jesse was only 16.

The photo shows Lillian Mae Lawson and her husband John Lawson, as well as Lillian’s mother Polly Johnson and Bessie (little girl).

Every one of Rowena Carter Haye’s children was presented with a beautiful, handcrafted quilt in the Dresden Plate pattern, including her daughter, the owner of the property and that is the reason this particular pattern was chosen to grace this barn. Rowena has made many quilts for all her children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren.

Beautiful, bright Red tulips on a pure white background, surrounded with strips of royal blue cover just one of the many many quilts created by this property owner’s mother and to honor her, was chosen for its premium spot on the large barn on Almyra Road, yet visible from ‘Bakers Crossroad’ where Highway 136 (Old Kentucky Road) meets Highway 135 (Burgess Falls Road) in the northern section of White County.

Here is the inspiration original quilt. So pretty.

Windmill. 543 Willie Jarvis Road (36°011443,-85°535431) Red barn on west side of the roadway

A favorite pattern for an avid quilter, this barn owner has created several quilts using the windmill pattern in several colors, including a beautiful pink one for her granddaughter.

After searching through several hundred block patterns, this property owner chose ‘With Heart and Hands’ pattern, and was very intentional in choosing the blue, green and ‘Volunteer’ UT Big Orange, being a huge University of Tennessee fan. (if you look close, you will see the big white ‘T’ in the center orange piece.

This beautiful Flower Garden quilt pattern was chosen by the property owner because it represented the last quilt blocks pieced  by the owner’s mother before she passed away. These blocks were designed and painted by the property owner.

History submitted by Sharon Lee Whitson:

“The quilt, from which this block design was taken, was made by my grandmother, Laura Hampton Lee, in the late 1950’s. She made each of her three grandchildren a ‘Tulip Quilt.’ My grandmother was not an avid quilter / needlework person, but spent much of each day working long hours of hard labor on the family farm to help her husband provide for their family. She plowed corn, hoed tobacco, milked cows, and raised a large garden. She sold eggs at the crossroads grocery store in exchange for flour, sugar, etc. My grandmother LOVED to cook and provided many delicious and bountiful meals for the family and workhands on the farm. However, from this busy schedule of hard work, she hosted and attended the ‘Home Demonstration Club’ meetings. It was there that she got the idea and pattern for making this ‘Tulip Quilt.’  Family History: Laura Hampton Lee lived in the Hampton’s Crossroads Community of White County and her entire life attended Hampton’s Crossroads Baptist Church, a church with strong ties to her family history and heritage. If you look directly northwest of the barn location you can see the steeple of the present Hampton’s Crossroads Baptist Church. My grandmother moved to ‘this’ location, only ¼ mile south after the family farm and home was split by the construction of Highway 111. She lived here until her death in 1995 at the age of 87. I hope you have enjoyed looking into the life of my grandmother, Laura Hampton Lee, through this quilt – which was only one of her many endeavors. She was a strong willed, Southern woman with true grit that taught me so many useful things! ~with loving memories, Sharon Lee Whitson, granddaughter of Laura Hampton Lee.

The blocks at this location were painted by the ladies of the O’Connor FCE (Family and Community Education) Club (formerly known as the Home Demonstration Clubs coordinated through the UT Extension Office) which includes Laura’s daughter-in-law Martha Lee, and two of Laura’s granddaughters.

Welcome to Quilts on Barns (and everywhere else) blog

Welcome to Quilts on Barns (and everywhere else) blog.

We are so glad you are here. I hope you enjoy the journey. I am a little tired, after spending the past couple of days working the Stitch and Share Quilt Show in Sparta. Tired, but good. So many beautiful quilts, so many great people (and so many wonderful fabrics) as well as informative classes and fabulous antique quilts. Quilt turning and bbq lunch.

There will be posts from each Sparta - White County Quilt Trail location, with photos and details (history about the quilt block choice and even some family history and heritage). Today (May 5, 2012) there are 22 sites listed on the map guide - and more will be added as information is available.

Remember these are private residences, for the most part, and stay on the public right of ways when viewing the blocks.

For more information about listing Your barn quilt in the mapguide, call me at (931) 212-7832.
